The True Cost of Pet Ownership

The ASPCA estimates the average annual cost of owning a dog at $1,391 and a cat at $1,149 nationally. But these averages mask dramatic city-level differences. Veterinary costs, pet rent premiums, grooming, and boarding vary 50–100% between cheap and expensive markets.

The Pet Rent Premium Is the Biggest Variable

Many apartments charge additional monthly rent for pets, ranging from $25/month in cheap markets to $100+/month in expensive cities. Some buildings charge non-refundable pet deposits of $250–$500 on top of monthly pet rent. In NYC, pet-friendly apartments command a significant premium simply because supply is limited. In pet-friendly cities like Austin and Denver, the premium is much smaller.

Unexpected Pet Costs

Should You Get Pet Insurance?

Pet insurance costs $30–$70/month for dogs and $20–$40/month for cats. It typically covers accidents and illnesses but not pre-existing conditions or routine care. For most pet owners, a dedicated pet savings fund ($50–$100/month into a separate account) provides similar protection with more flexibility and no claim denials. Insurance makes most sense for breeds prone to expensive health issues (bulldogs, German shepherds, Maine Coons).
